1998 - Local Entrepreneur Wins National Award and Teaches New Yorkers How to Avoid Parking Tickets

One of the best products in America to fight parking tickets can be found in New York City. The “Parking Pal” placards, developed by Louis Camporeale, author of The New York City Motorists’ Parking Survival Guide, were selected among the “Top 500 Most Unique and Interesting Products in America” in 1997 by the National Mail Order Association in their annual review of new consumer products.

The award-winning “Parking Pals” are brightly colored, laminated placards with the parking laws printed right on them. Once placed on a vehicle’s dashboard for visibility through the windshield, “Parking Pals” act as a defense mechanism informing Traffic Enforcement Agents of the applicable law and the motorist’s right to park before a summons is written. There are three “Parking Pals” available -- one for parking at broken meters and on streets with no regulation signs, another for commercial delivery vehicles loading and unloading and one for medical professionals. All “Parking Pals” come complete with instructions for these various parking situations.

“Anyone who parks their car in New York City has a lot to gain from using the Parking Pal’s Motorist Educational Products,” explains Camporeale. “When motorists use our products, they learn their legal parking rights, avoid tickets and have straightforward instructions on how to address erroneous tickets.” Parking Today magazine (5/98) says “Parking Pal makes it their business that people in the Big Apple know where it’s legal to park, know the laws and are prepared to fight and win when parking citations are issued.”

In response to motorists’ needs for parking enlightenment, Camporeale established the Parking Pal Motorist Education Company in 1994. Since then, Parking Pal has become a motorists’ advocate throughout New York City.

In addition to authoring The New York City Motorists’ Parking Survival Guide, Camporeale is a parking columnist, lecturer and inventor of the award-winning “Parking Pal” Motorist Educational Products. In community seminars, he teaches motorists the secrets of parking laws and techniques motorists should know to avoid and successfully defend against parking tickets.

To make sense of the Street Cleaning Rules and other parking suspensions, Parking Pal offers the Parking Suspension Calendar & Parking Primer, which highlights the days when Street Cleaning Rules (formerly Alternate Side Parking) are suspended, days when Legal Holiday rules are in effect and the 18 Summons Alert Days during which motorists are most likely to receive a summons. The Primer contains important traffic telephone numbers, a typical street regulation sign chart and a variety of other valuable parking information. The Calendar and Primer also features a chart of an actual parking ticket highlighting the Parking Pal Top Ten Defects for an Automatic Dismissal. The chart indicates the exact information a motorist needs in order to obtain an automatic ticket dismissal.

When the location or the physical facts of a summons are in question, Camporeale also offers an instruction manual entitled How to Take a Photo for the PVB. The guide graphically describes the specific elements required when a motorist is planning a “photo defense” for a parking ticket. The guide explains a simple and effective technique which can prove that a summons was issued to a vehicle at a nonexistent address.

Another helpful reference tool to keep motorists updated on new changes in parking laws is the Motorist Education Report, published quarterly and for special editions throughout the year. Focusing on policy changes and new developments in parking laws, the MER highlights the impact of new laws to motorists, addresses reader mail -- by answering parking questions. It also offers useful automotive and pertinent parking data. The Motorist Education Report is delivered via first-class mail to subscribers’ homes or businesses for only $12 for a one-year subscription.

“Getting a ticket is not a big deal if you know how to fight it,” says Camporeale. “My goal is to educate the motoring public about parking laws so motorists can park safely in New York City. Our Parking Pal Motorist Educational Products will continue to help motorists understand the law and teach them how to protect their rights.” The philosophy of Parking Pal is simple: Know your rights...Avoid parking tickets.
